What or who inspires you?

My kids inspire me because I want to be a good role model. I have two little girls and I want them to see from their mom that they can do anything they want at anytime in their lives. Life just also inspires me, you never know what you're going to see and where and I love when I am able to capture an image that makes me feel something.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Talk about making a long story short! I've always been into photography my entire life. Like many people I got my DSLR when I had my first child. I tried to work with a school sports/studio photographer so I could learn, but that didn't work out because our schedules didn't mesh. So I did a few jobs here and there while teaching myself, but used a program mode or the green box. It wasn't until a few years back I even tried manual and was really intimidated by it so I stayed with my safe modes. I did have a website but never told anyone about it becuase I wasn't confident in my "ablilities" and would never have called myself a photographer!! It wasn't until I found MeRa while googling "manual techniques" that any of it made sense! Her way of explaining things made it click for me and so I tried a little here and there. Even with MeRa's blog I felt I was alone in my efforts and didn't really have anyone to actually talk to and ask questions, so my growth was slow and painful. It wasn't until the SOAR Scholarship that things really turned around. The group of women that I "met" and have gotten to know have literally changed my life! I would not be even close to where I am without them (you). With their guidance and support I have continued to work (and get better) on manual (the only way I shoot now) and have a new website, confidence and I actually call myself a photographer!!!! As I continually learn about technique, I am now also teaching myself about the business side and I know I can always count on my "Soar Sisters" to be there to answer my questions. So that explains the journey into the world of photography....The "why" part is much easier and shorter :) Because I LOVE to take pictures!!!! I love trying to capture moments that can instantly bring you back to that time and evoke some emotion. Video is fun and fine but I prefer photos for my memories. I would get some nice compliments on my pictures so I decided to try and make a small business out of something I love to do :)

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I have a 'Business' (is it a business if you haven't yet turned a profit?). I've been doing mainly portraits of children and families and hope one day to include weddings. The new website and my official coming out as a photographer (see I said it again) has been since Feburary. I've done a lot of freebies to have new photos for my site and a few modestly paid jobs. With the help of a "sisiter" or two I now have collections to offer my clients!!!

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Well MeRa Koh for the above reason :) I'll check out Jasmine Star and Melissa Jill when I have time but I MAKE the time for MeRa and (ladies that were at MeRa's workshop with me know the next one....so say it with me) Jerry Ghionis!!!! What he does with natural light or a video light is just amazing! He makes ART! My long term goal is to take MeRa's lessons on technique and Jerry's style and take my family portraits to a different place...really find and define my own style. They both really inspire me to do and be better and I thank you both (Not that I ever met Jerry Ghionis).

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I'm a stay at home mom - my kids and husband are my full-time job and I try to find/make time for my passion which I have gotten better at doing as well. I have done some volunteer work as a photographer, in fact I have a volunteer job coming up on the 23rd with two radio stations doing a charity event for St. Judes.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Honestly....this is it! Other than being with my family and friends of course!

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Nope

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Hum, there are a lot of things I'd like to change but I think first and foremost....I'd like people in general to be nicer and the world safer.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Have the finacial freedom to travel more, give my children life experiences/adventures to help mold them into the awesome adults I know they'll be, have a successful career as a photographer.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Have at least one session a month, a wedding (pereferably small) by the end of the year and to be able to consistently produce sharp images. With that said, I know not all great pictures are tack sharp but I'd like to be able to produce them as it says to me I know how to use my camera.

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

One my first attempts at shooting on manual a few years back and I think it looks really cool.

Cailtin 1year old (now 6)-I got one of my all time favorite shots with a point and shoot! I think it has an old feel to it and she looks like a doll.

This is from our last vacation to California where I took A LOT of pictures. I shot in manual and had the time to just sit there on the beach and play with my settings as the kids had a good time. When I look at this picture, it reminds me to "slow down!" I also liked catching Caitlin just enjoying the ocean and not knowing I was taking her picture (she gives the 6yr old pouty face a lot now)

We had a family BBQ over the holiday weekend with family I don't get to see often. My cousin wanted a silly picture of him and his new wife but I got this in between. It shows me promise in my efforts in pursuing this dream....still have a long way to go though.

What or who inspires you?

People who are happy in life that have overcome something hard! I have a hard time dealing with sadness. Life is so full of it! I am always looking for ways to cope! Seeing people who have lost loved ones or survived cancer living life with smiles on their faces. I know that the pain is still there but they choose to live life. There are so many things that we can be thankful for even when we are hurting. Having the ability to still live is such an important attribute!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I remember being young and always drawn to my moms photo albums. The kind that has “magnetic” pages. Why are they called magnetic? They are STICKY!! I really loved one in particular. She had the grades at the top from K to 12. Each kids school picture was on the pages. You could see each of us at the same age. It was really cool! When I was 10 I would use my mom’s 35mm camera to just go and play! When I was 12 she bought me my first camera! It was a 110! (Oh man! I am getting old!) I took my camera EVERYWHERE! I was really involved in my youth group and took it to summer camp and to school!

In high school I took two years of photography. I has so much fun making a camera out of a bandaid box! I loved the darkroom! I was so amazed at what I could create! I learned so much about b&w photography! Then school got out and I went to college in Denver . I always had a small p&s. 35mm, Advantix, my grandpa’s old SEARS 35mm.

I was always the one in the group with the camera! I could be quite annoying but I loved giving framed prints as gifts. I also loved to scrapbook!

A friend had the Canon Digital Rebel and let me borrow on a trip to Disneyland ! (What a trusting friend) I fell in LOVE!! I decided to start saving! I knew that I really wanted to do something with photography. I am also that person who HATES when something I buy is outdated 2 days later. (I know that technology is EVER changing and I LOVE that. BUT 2 days? 5 months is ok!) I decided I wanted the 20D. While saving up the 30D was introduced. I WAS so happy to have a camera that had just been released!

I love that you can capture a moment and relive that moment over and over! I love that we are leaving behind our legacy for the generations behind us. Pictures we take today are all that our family members are going to have of us. (Besides our old used things.) I love the emotion I see when I look at beautiful pictures. Beautiful locations. I am so thankful that I get to see beautiful sunsets or beautiful beaches from across the world.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I have a hard time saying I have a business. I have a logo that took me MONTHS to design, a name (kinda), a website that I just finally got up 2 weeks ago.

In February of 2006 I was talking to a friend who needed a photographer for a mother-daughter event she was having. She encouraged me, and asked me to photograph her event! So I bought the camera 2 weeks before her event! I have mostly shot friends and family! I really struggle with the business side of things! Working full-time and being so involved in church keeps me busy!

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I have so many! I am inspired by Tara Whitney! I love her real-ness! I love her photojournalistic style!

I love Me Ra’s story. The things she has overcome! WOW! Such an inspiration!

Justin and Mary Marantz are amazing! Jasmine Star and her zest for learning and willingness to share is so awesome!

My friend Sharon is truly an inspiration! We used to scrapbook together. We both had advantix camera’s and both loved taking pictures! I have seen her grow so much! She is so smart and learns so quickly! She has attended two of Me Ra’s workshops and just watching her journey is such an inspiration. I love her style! Her personality! Her faith!

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I work for Meyer Corporation as a Marketing Logistics Coordinator! Meyer makes pots and pans! Anolon, Circulon, Rachael Ray, KitchenAid, Paula Deen, Food Network, Pampered Chef…

I serve (volunteer) at First Christian Church in Suisun City . I have attended for over 24 years!

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I LOVE crafting! I see something and think “I can do that!”

This first picture just makes me so happy! This is my best friends son and husband! I love it! It may not be the most technically perfect picture but the fun you see is real!!

This next picture was taken during what San Francisco calls an Indian Summer. October in SF. Clear skies! Unlike summer in SF. Lots of fog in summer months! I love living where I do! So close to the city! I love this bridge and this beach!

I am kinda cheating here with this last one. More then one picture here. I created this collage for a funeral program. My best friend's father-in-law passed away suddenly nine months after we did this photo shoot. It reiterated how important family pictures are to me! During such a sad time I was so thankful that we have these pictures.

The picture of me {top of page} is after climbing the tallest hill I have ever climbed! I ended up hiking 4.5 miles at the end of this day! I went on a photography and wild flower hike at Lynch Canyon and had a GREAT time! I was so nervous going somewhere where I didn’t know anyone and being alone. I really had a great time! I was so proud of myself for not quitting!

We clicked from the moment we met and haven't stopped since. He's a singer/songwriter and has a day job running his general contracting business. I used to help him in it at the start of our relationship but not anymore. Apparently I was an excellent painter! :D

I am the incredibly lucky person who won a Canon 1D Mark IV from Scott Bourne. He's an amazing artist, and generous as well which is incredibly lucky for all of us! Love reading his blog and tweets. And the camera is incredible. I spend so much less time editing. More and more of the images I want to share are SOOC. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm loving the images coming out of our time together so far, which hasn't been long.

My trusty Canon Rebel XSi/450D/Kiss X2 is now my back-up. It came with an 18-55mm IS lens that won't work on my 1D.

I have a 50mm that I adore. It is the lens that's usually on my camera. I shoot everything with it. Portraits, flowers, landscapes, everything. Love it. It works on both cameras!

I also have a 70-300mm that now seems much heavier on this bigger body. Such a great lens! Love the colour and clarity I get with it. Also works with both cameras. :D Good planning there, right?

What's your favorite editing software?

Aperture. Hands down it's Aperture. In this last release so much was improved that I now use everything so much less. Photoshop is now rarely opened. Which I love because it makes the whole processing part quicker, simpler and more beautiful.

Favorite Food:

Ice cream! Ha. I love all food. Seriously. SO many memories of family meals and connecting with people. Love it. Lately I've been loving green beans with garlic and olive oil with chicken and a salad. Delicious! Ask me again in a few days and I'll have a different dish, no doubt. My grandmother's cooking is what inspired a love of food and the association of it with loved ones. Her food was the best tasting I've ever had. I wish I'd had more time with her.

Favorite Color:

Brown. Every shade of it. Except maybe one. He he.

A few of your favorite things:

My son's roaring belly laugh. My husband holding my foot. Getting a shot of a tiny expression on someone's face that immediately takes me back to that moment, that moves me. Flowers. Books. Apples. Bananas. Mangoes.

What or who inspires you?

The amazing gift of being a mother to my son inspires me. As does this incredible planet we get to call home. People who wear their hearts on their sleeves and don't apologize for it. Art, movement, love, wonder and curiosity also inspire me.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

Chocolate. Just a taste.

Tea. Preferably two cups of ceylon to start the day off or this lovely green tea that my friend got me from Korea.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I remember asking my parents to let me take pictures with their camera when we were on vacation when I was quite young. Eight or so. I just loved taking them, and loved looking at them, wondering about what I could and couldn't see in the frame. Then when I was off to boarding school at sixteen, I decided to get my own camera. It was such an exciting day!! It wasn't until my Aunt Carole suggested it in 2003 that I even considered the idea of doing it professionally. She was so encouraging and I am grateful to her. I love it. I've been shooting almost every day for the last few years and before that shot only a little less!

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I left my day job to pursue a photography business full time in March 2008. After shooting a wedding in Long Beach, three months later I came home to discover that I was pregnant! It was shocking and glorious and life changing. It's been an incredible, challenging and beautiful time. I've been shooting weddings and portraits, then during my pregnancy I found that I could only really handle more portrait work... which I love. Since my son is older, I am starting to get back into shooting weddings.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

There are a lot of photographers that I admire and learn from for reasons as wildly learning more about business and learning more about artistry. From an artistic perspective I think that Image is Found and Jeff Newsom are consistently original and create jaw dropping stuff. I also find that Steve McCurry, Silvana Di Franco, Jonathan Canlas, Sean Flanigan and Sarah Rhoads invariably have work that has me vascillating between utter wonder and a curiosity about how they created the image. There are many more that I follow and pay attention to, but I'm starting to fall asleep now so I'll have to save those for some other time.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

Caring for my son is my other full time job.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Haven't had much time for them lately but I also love arts and crafts- painting, sewing, drawing, knitting etc.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Not yet. But I'd love to do more album designing. I want to get people's photographs out of harddrives and into books where people will look at and enjoy them.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Compassion. I think more of it would let us all get along better. We'd also be more creative in solving problems because we would consider the impact of our actions not only on the world around us but also the possible future impact.

Name three things you would like to do before you die:

Travel more

Publish a book

Be happy and show/express my love daily to those around me (including myself)

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Get my photographs published in a print/online publication

Eat out a maximum of once every two weeks

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

This is a recent favorite of my son. I photograph him with at least one of my cameras once a day. He is an absolute joy to capture and I am so glad that I have this incredible record of his growth! He's ridiculously gorgeous and ever-changing.

I love portraiture. It's so interesting to look at people and try to put yourself in their shoes whilst imagining what they might be going through. This is my friend Sierra who is fierce, beautiful, authentic and brave!

These were growing beside the pavement (what folks here call sidewalk) and they just took my breath away with their simplicity and glorious beauty. This planet is incredibly gorgeous and there's so much to see and enjoy. It blows my mind. I love this reminder that beauty is something inherent in everywhere, and also that it can occur anywhere. Even beside a street in a huge metropolis!

Finally, here's one of my favorite wedding pictures. This was after the main ceremony and before the reception when the bride and groom were relaxing upstairs and receiving the occasional personal guest. It was just a sweet and restful time before the hubbub of the reception and they were both so relaxed and glowing that it was easy to shoot them!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Kind of a long story, well first experience with photography was sophomore class in highs chool and I loved the class but became lazy and actually cheated on my last assignment but confessed I used some one else's film ( sorry Mr. Murphy) then during my senior year, my first job ever in life was as a photographer at J.C Penny photography Studio, crying babies and no pee breaks, was out of there in 6 months, fast forward 12 years later, I had been trying to get into wedding business, tried gift baskets then invitations, but I had been doing slideshows for my church for 2 years already and some folks who were hiring me for invites and slideshows started saying, well I do not have a good picture, can you take one for me, and I took some with regular point and shoot and was like hum, I like this, I can do this, why not get paid for this? But the real magic came when a recent friend who had just started her party decorating business had a client and she called me and said, you could photograph this client and I did not even have a camera, so I looked on line on how to price it, sort of, spoke to client, sent prices and nothing, I did not think she would call back, I bought my first DSLR on the way to my shoot and have not stopped shooting ever since. I did a lot of Maternity, Family, Kids, Events at first and have plunged into weddings the last 6 months. It took me almost 30 years to finally find out what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Answered a bit up top, right now trying to focus more on wedding photography and some life style portrait, would love to have a seniors brand, perhaps in future.

I have a few, I love Jasmine Star because of her sharp colorful images and amazing way of writing the couples story. I also am a big fan of Justin and Mary from CT and Gray Photographers from Nashville, these are all genuine people who give back, share and have amazing photography. I recently found

Nick Onken who has some amazing work and understand branding, my favorite topic quite well. Some others who have inspired me include Paula Leme, Brazilian photographer and Sarah Rhodes stuff is so cool too!

Full-time Super Hero Mom, also assist in husband's tile installation business, and I have done childrens' ministry at my church for many years.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Love topics on branding, love to travel, love to plan things, love to watch funny movies, love to talkkkkk!

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I was trying to do a videography business for my husband, but realized it is two completely different businesses, so I do not think we will go that route. I do, however, plan to offer some fusion options as I play with the mix of still motion and live.

Hannah Joys picture- this was a month to month baby I did for an year and this was my favorite session especially since her name has Joy in it and as I said Joy is so important to me, God's Joy that I have in my life.

This one is from a destination wedding I did last year. This was one of my first weddings and has opened up many doors including getting feautured on bridal crate magazine.

This has been my favorite E session and recently used many pictures of it for my website launch and this has been a favorite of many folks.

I am still building my bag. I am updating soon… really soon, but currently I shoot with a Nikon D70, 50mm 1.8, a couple of crap kit lenses, Nikon Speedlight SB600, various flash cards, battery charger, tripod. I am fortunate to have a generous friend who allows me to use his Nikkor 17-55mm 2.8 and Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 –sweet.

What's your favorite editing software?

I love Lightroom right now. I would really like to find a relatively inexpensive workshop to learn all the ins and outs.

Favorite Food? Indian, Thai, and Cornish Pasties … chocolate and red wine

Favorite Color? Blues/greens … but nothing too light.

A few of your favorite things?

Give me some good bread, cheese, a nice bottle of red wine and good conversation with someone who has a wicked sense of humor.

What or who inspires you?

It sounds cheesy but my husband and my children inspire me. My children inspire me to be a better person, a more patient person (it doesn’t always work out that way though).

I met my husband when we were 21 at the University of Florida (go GATORS). He really is a forward thinker when it comes to sustainable architecture and green building. Sometimes he has these wacky ideas and, despite my better judgment, I often find myself standing right beside him as we blunder forth. We are constantly in a housing renovation or project… and I’m waiting for the day when he decides he wants to live off the land and completely off the grid. I, however, am waiting for the day we can move to a villa in Tuscany. A fixer upper of course.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

Several cups of coffee, smiles, hugs and kisses from my children. Afternoon cups of tea and a good laugh are also daily requirements.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I fell in love with photography in high school. Processing film and spending time in the dark room was magical. I truly wanted to work for National Geographic. After going through the “J” school at the University of Florida I ended up going into television news instead as a news producer. But I have never lost my love of photography and I’ve always, always been the one behind the camera. I never even thought I could have my own photography business until I got laid off and different things started falling into place. Friends kept encouraging me. Then I heard Me Ra Koh speak last year at a Mama’s with Cameras meeting here in Seattle. And then came SOAR. I still have so much to learn, but that’s what’s making it exciting.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?
I can’t say I have a favorite. There are so many I admire. So many different styles.

Phil Borges is a Seattle area photographer who has taken stunning photographs of indigenous peoples. His books are beautiful and he has a nonprofit organization that works uses digital storytelling to connect school children around the world. http://www.bridgesweb.org/

Lynette Huffman Johnson took my maternity photographs when I was pregnant with Owen and I admire what she has done with her Soulumination organization.
And of course Me Ra … who has been so generous with her time, knowledge, talent and her heart. I’m always following her work… along with many of our talented SOAR sisters.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I was a television news producer up until about two and a half years ago. I worked as a line producer, which meant I produced daily newscasts, but then I had the awesome job of a special projects producer and was able to tell human interest and community interest stories. I loved doing that. I also did a short stint in media relations at a public affairs firm for about a year. But for the last year and a half I have been a stay at home mum. Now I’m seriously looking for more freelance projects in order to finance this biz.

I volunteer with and I am on the communications board of an organization called Teens In Public Service… an orgnization that gives teenagers a paid internship with other nonprofits in the greater Puget Sound area over the summers. The organization teaches kids to be leaders in their community … and teaches the importance of community service.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I spend quite a bit of time driving to soccer practices and soccer games every week since my girls play a lot of soccer. So even though I do not drive a minivan I guess I have become a typical soccer mum.

The three year old and I hang out at the park, library, zoo or where ever we can go to run off some of his energy.

I love to read, drink wine and I watch LOST.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Goodness that’s a tough one. There are so many issues out there that people struggle with on a daily basis… hunger, poverty, homelessness to fighting awful diseases. But I would love to see an end to discrimination of all types and a world that is more tolerant of others.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1. Make sure that my children grow up to become responsible, caring, considerate citizens of the world who will make a contribution. That they appreciate all that they have and the responsibility that comes with it and that they learn to speak out.

2. I would love to travel extensively on every continent with camera in hand (okay, maybe just a short stay in Antarctica)

3. Get photographs published in National Geographic … or dinner with George Clooney … I can’t decide.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. Get a paying photography client.
2. Get back on my bicycle and ride, ride, ride.
3. Start writing that children’s book that is rattling around in my head.

I have a really hard time choosing favorites of anything if you haven’t noticed…but here goes…

This is a photo I took is of my second daughter when she is 9 holding our son when he is only a few days old. It’s not the best photograph, but I think it shows such a tender moment.

This is our house almost three years ago. I love how it’s tilting to get

around light poles and branches.

My nephews. They were awfully hard to photograph … they didn’t stop moving and

I didn’t have a very good lens when I took this, but its a sweet few seconds between

the two of them when they did slow down.

This is a recent photograph of my oldest daughter.

I hadn’t planned on taking her photograph that afternoon,

but we happened to walk past these beautiful old trees and the light was lovely.

What or who inspires you?

What inspires me is to live my life every day to its fullest potential and try not to sweat the small stuff. I am finding that the more I embrace that mentality I have become a much happier person.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

My love for photography started back in high school because of a good friend of mine. We actually had a dark room in our school and I got a chance to see her develop the film. I thought it was so cool but I thought the process would be too hard for me to learn. My mother also was an avid photographer so there was always a camera around.

What really launched this love into a career was because of my husband. His work schedule has really turned our family life upside down. He is a printing press operator and he works the 3-11 shift. So when he gets home he doesn't see us and misses all the fun things that the kids are doing. In the printing industry, the only way to get a dayshift seems to be when the veteran of thirty something years FINALLY retires. Tom was getting very frustrated and wanted to quit his job and make less money just so he could be home with us. I explained to him that if you have passion for what you do then you should not quit. Since he purchased my first SLR as an anniversary gift, I had started to take pictures of my kids and for friends. I knew the style that I was trying to achieve but didn’t know how to go about it. That’s when I said to my husband that I wanted photography to be our light at the end of the tunnel. I said, if I can make just enough so you can work part time then we would get to see more of you. I figured it is a small price to pay with an amazing reward at the end.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

My preference is to do on-location natural light photography but I also have some starter studio equipment. I mainly photograph children ages 0-15 and families because inside I am still a kid so I can relate better.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Gosh, that is a really difficult question for me and when I knew I was going to have a spotlight I was really trying to think of what to say.

I would have to say Audrey Woulard and MeRa. I fell in love with Audery’s work and was hell bent on taking part in her Leanfest workshop even if I had to take out a loan to pay for it. When I found out that they were no longer going to offer Learnfest I began a hunt for workshops where the photographer felt a bond during their learning experience. That’s when I found MeRa and then she launched SOAR and I was amazed by her power to move people with simple text on a screen. She is honest, she is real and I feel like I know her already. That is what I hope people will say about me when they are telling their friends to book a session with me. I want to be familiar like your favorite pair of blue jeans. Comfortable and relaxing but makes ya look really good!

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am a sales account executive for FedEx Services. I am responsible for working with small to medium sized businesses and getting them to ship FedEx. I have been pretty successful in the short amount of time that I have been here. I was selected this year to be a mentor to the new hires. So I guess they like me and will keep me. The more I focus on the business side of photography, I am learning that the way I sell express and ground packages should be the way I sell and market to clients. Be honest, be true and it will come back to you tenfold.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I am really getting into graphic design. I see the card templates that are sold to photographers and I want to learn how to create my own. I have created a few but I am not crazy about them. So as I learn and get better maybe I can sell them too.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I hope to get the hang of the design thing this year so I can begin to offer them to photographers.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Equality. I understand that everyone is entitled to their views on equal rights but I think that people forget that passing judgment on others is just hurtful. If circumstances were reversed, would they be so judgmental? Every person deserves to find happiness and love. Ohh and in the words of Sandra Bullock in Ms. Congeniality, “World Peace”.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Move to Spain, immerse myself in the culture, and learn the language without a book in hand.

Open a karaoke-inspired restaurant

See all three of my kids graduate, get their first “real job”, get married and have grandkids.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Market…market…market myself. I want to make mistakes this year and figure out what works and what doesn’t work for me in this crazy business of photography.

Become a Senior Account Executive, it comes with a pay raise and my photography wish list I think is at 3 pages now.

Go see Garth Brooks in concert in Vegas!! It’s the ONLY way my husband is going to get me to go to that city.

This was my first attempt at being artistic. I think it says a lot with out even one face in the photo.

This was my very first session where I shot 100% manual. When I went to edit the pictures,

I realized I had finally nailed the eyes and I didn’t have to do much

post processing to get them there.

This last one is merely because I am obsessed with tulips and I somehow managed to take picture of a bee in flight. How did I do it? I have not a clue but it looks darn good!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Photography has been something that I have loved since junior high. There were two photography classes offered at the college I went to and I took them both but they were mainly about the darkroom. Soon after college a friend of a friend started a photography business and I remember feeling jealous because she didn't have a degree in photography, which I thought was a necessary pre-requisite for people actually hiring you to take pictures of them. Then about two and a half years ago I wrote a list of some goals I had at the time, one was to "get back into photography" (I didn't know how to utilize my point and shoot and I hadn't used my film slr in years). A year after that, I e-mailed a photographer friend and asked him if he knew anyone that was selling a really good digital camera, it just so happened that he was. My husband would only allow me to spend that much money on a camera if I would start a business, so I did it. The first thing I did was offer a day of very inexpensive mini-sessions for Christmas portraits to a mom's group that I'm a part of and I've had a handful of paying clients since then but it's been tough getting my name out there.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I do on location, natural light portraits. Babies, children, families, graduates, pregnancy. I would like to start shooting weddings, I actually booked my first one for this coming August!

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I don't think I can pick just one! I love Me Ra and Jasmine Star.

I stay home with my kids, my oldest is in kindergarten this year so she is gone for three hours everyday. I volunteer on the photo team at my church. I lead a discussion group within a larger group of moms that meets twice per month.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I love acting, I wish I lived in a city that had more opportunities to audition for shows. I love to cook gourmet meals, cooking everyday meals- not so much. I aspire to become a gourmet cupcake baker. So far, I've only had one success and about 5 fails. I like to have good conversations over coffee, does that count as a hobby?

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I had to think long on this one, it's hard to pick just ONE. I'm a Christian though, and the most important thing in my life is my choice to follow Jesus Christ. He desires a relationship with every human being and as his follower I want to love people the way that he loves them. I would want every man, woman and child to accept his gift of salvation and to walk in the fullness of life that only he can offer.

Have long term healthy relationships with the people I love.

One of my kids because, well how could I not pick one of them? They are my favorites!

A pregnancy portrait from last summer because I love this time in a woman's life.

I love that she's usually feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious and huge then

she sees the pictures of herself and realizes how beautiful she really looks.

Two little boys at their house from last fall. I love the personality in this picture,

I tend to gravitate towards pictures that show personality all the time, they speak to me.

For some reason I love the pictures I take of newborns and daddy's so

much more than with their mom's. This one just pulls my heartstrings.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

My son was turning 1 and we were going to take him to get his portraits "professionally" done at Sears or something. My husband suggested that since I loved photography so much I should turn our spare room into a photo studio and do the portraits myself, and that maybe I could make a business out of it. I started doing the research and realized for the first time that the world of DSLRs was a far cry from point and shoots, but I was game to learn. Within weeks my camera equipment was given to me and we found studio lights on ebay. I took my son's portraits (they were horrible), learned the ins and outs of photography from online forums and built my portfolio.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

My business is YL Designs. It was originally just graphic design for businesses (logos, brochures, flyers, business cards, etc) but evolved into photography in 2008. I say that I am a Portrait and Wedding Photographer for the funky, eclectic, artistic and lovely =)

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Like many, I absolutely love David Jay and Jasmine Star. They were the first photographers I came across who really broke the mold of photographers I had seen and made me feel like it was possible to be authentically me in this business. I can't say enough about them and their success is a true testament to the amount of people they have helped succeed.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I run a non-profit organization called Point of Creation (POC). It is a dynamic and encouraging community of artistic, business minded Christian women who inspire, mentor and equip one another to leave a legacy. What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I was really into digital scrapbooking for a while. That pretty much stopped when I launched my business, but it's so fun! I love to read Dale Carnegie, Seth Godin, Kim Kiyosaki and others like them.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Graphic design/art is incorporated, but I have all sorts of business ideas apart from photography that will come to fruition in the near future. I absolutely plan on writing books as well and developing a POC Academy.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

The educational system in America. Public schools are so disparate from city to city, state to state. We have really fallen behind as a nation and it will hurt us in the future. Not to mention that children are not being taught essential things they need as adults in this country - money management and investment, leadership and entrepreneurial skills, discovering their innate giftings and callings, etc.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

I want to open POC Academies all over the country. I want to travel the world with my family. I want to accomplish everything I was put here to accomplish - and see my husband/children do the same.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. Publish my first book. 2. Have this1st POC Women's Retreat be successful. 3. Hit my goal weight =)

A few of your favorite things?

Quite time to think, read, journal, pray. Morning coffee, lingering hugs and kisses, long walks, sunshine, thunderstorms, wind, the sound of a crackling fire, rivers, trees, wild birds, music, singing, being silly, laughter, dark chocolate, candles, smiles, quality time with friends and family.

What or who inspires you?

My husband, children, trusted friends and mentors are my biggest source of inspiration. I also find unending inspiration from being in nature and spending time with young children and the elderly.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

Morning coffee is a must, then it's onto time with the Lord, time in His word, praying, being still in His presence, worshiping, learning, seeking Him and His will for my life.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I have always loved photography. My mother was a compulsive shutter bug and my dad has always helped me notice the beauty all around in nature and in people. I think photography is somewhat of an inherited passion, passed down from the generations. The day I realized that my passion for photography was over the top, was a spring evening in 2005. I was at my husband's softball game, but instead of cheering him on, I wandered to a nearby playground. Before I knew it, I was not only following my kids around, but was actually following other children around and capturing images of them at play. It was official! I had become a "STALKER!" I remember feeling so alive and excited about the images I had captured, that I could hardly sleep that night. That was the moment the dream of birthing a photography business was born.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I launched my photography business in the Spring of 2006....It was just taking flight when our family had an unexpected move out of state. I am looking to re-launch my photography business this year. I love natural-light portrait photography for children, families, pets, engagement, newborns, maternity and high school seniors. I have photographed two weddings and really have no interest in pursuing that path. (Not because of the bride, but because of my own personal energy level.) It's important to me that a photo session be fun, creative, laid-back and enjoyable. Popular session locations include the oceanfront, local parks and family homes. My goal at every session is to get a sense of what they hope for and do my very best to bring that image to life.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

MeRa Koh- Her talents go far beyond her abilities behind the lens, she reaches into the very soul of her clients and those she and Brian mentor.

Tessa with Grin and Share it Profesional Photography- I just love her fun, care-free style with families and children.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I'm a full time momma and pastor's wife. I also volunteer as a teachers aid for Pre and Elementary age children, teach childrens church and provide community service to low income families with infants and newborns.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Read, hike, bike, travel, swim, sing, dance, animal training, horseback ride, water-ski, antiquing, story telling, writing, drawing, painting, baking, gardening, exploring, adventuring, beach combing, going on road trips, people watching.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I have had the opportunity to use my photography skills to help others market homes, property, vehicles, livestock etc....I guess this could be considered as a little side business. I also have been hired to put together slide shows for memorial services, church services, birthday parties and weddings. I love telling someones story through word and image and any way I can do that is fun and often times profitable. I also have spent time putting together collages as an added gift or option to purchase.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Remove all suffering and injustice in the world. So that the pain would stop. That all those sick would find heal, all those hungry-be well fed, those who hate- learn to love, those in poverty- find provision and hope, those who are being abused be rescued.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1)Travel to Africa.

2) Go on a short term mission as a family.

3) Adopt or foster a child in need.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1) Purchase a new camera and really learn how to use it creatively.

2) Re-launch my Photography business.

3) Create a website and start marketing my photography business.

Out of the Green Box...I attended one of MeRa workshops and was following her blog back in 2007. This was a series of images I took of my son after following some instructions about Capturing the Details. It was the first time I had stepped out of the green box and into manual mode. I was thrilled that one of these pics was included on the back of one of Mera's DVD's!

Tell us about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Ever since I can remember I have looked at moments in my life and have also observed moments from afar thinking “I wish I had a camera to capture that.” So this particular artistry has been a part of me since I was very young as I constantly see the world in “snapshots”.

For most of my adult life I trained and worked as an actress in New York, but took a “sabbatical” to marry and start a family in Virginia. A few years ago, with the artist in me yearning to come out, I bought my first Digital SLR (a Nikon D70) and started taking photographs. Friends and family encouraged me to think about photography as a profession and I started my business in the spring of 2009. But I would say that applying for the SOAR! Scholarship is what solidified my intent to call myself a photographer. Putting my dream out there, giving it voice, has been one of the most powerful experiences of my life.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc…

I began my business in the spring of 2009 and I primarily take portraits of families, children, babies and seniors – and more recently I’ve begun doing some corporate portraits and event photography.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

This is a tough one for me to answer. I'm still learning and I draw inspiration from so many sources. I do have one very famous photograph that I love – Dorothea Lange’s “Migrant Mother”. It is, to me, beautiful in it’s raw honesty. I strive to produce that kind of honesty in my work.

Besides photography, what else do you do, i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

In addition to photography, I teach dramatic arts to children. I am currently developing a curriculum to take to local private schools.

What are some other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I enjoy writing, LOVE reading ( I usually have 3 – 4 types of books going at once) and yoga.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I teach drama to kids.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Wow, BIG question, and a really difficult thing to narrow down to just one thing so I’ll write the first thing that came to mind – it seems to me that there is quite a lot of “distraction” in the world. There are now moniters in cabs, elevators, cars, standing in line… We have handheld devices that allow us to be reached anywhere and at anytime and avoid having “space” to think, to pray, to dream, to analyze and create original works. I guess I’d like to see a more of a collective embrace of that “space” and less dependence on the need to be constantly entertained or occupied.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1. Travel throughout the world

2. Become a certified yoga instructor

3. Learn to play the guitar

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. Earn my living entirely through artistic pursuits

2. Establish a regular fitness routine

3. Finish taking the remaining wallpaper off of the walls in my house

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Well... I went to a church sermon (hadn't been to church in like 10 years) last May to listen to an old co-worker (Jodi Massengale) give her first sermon. Hadn't seen her in 7 years... but knew I wanted to be there to support her. Little did I know... as the tears streamed down my cheeks while I listened to her words... that she was supporting me and delivering a powerful message that I needed to hear and one that I couldn't get out of my mind... God gives us all gifts/talents... we ought to pursue them... live them... now... today... and give thanks to God for blessing us with them. I purchased my first serious camera a month later (didn't even tell my husband about the $1000+ purchase until after I hit the submit button)... and a month after that I was invited by a professional photographer (a father in my daughter's class) to do a group shoot with 3 other professionals. SOOOO nervous... but I went to shoot the two families. Loved it! 8 months later... I am still truckin' towards finding my niche in the photography world.

It's in the very early stages... since June 2009... I have just been shooting families... a lot of friends... just getting my feet wet, you know? What I hope to move towards with my photography is working with breast cancer patients. I particaipated in the Breast Cancer 60 mile 3-Day walk... and was touched to the core by the women... their strength, their hope, their courage... their beauty. I would love to utilize my photography to give back to women affected by cancer... to capture those precious fleeting moments for them.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I have 3... & for different reasons.

1. Mera Koh ... she inspires me with her words.... with her encouragement... with her openness.

2. Amy Boring ... her style is AMAZING! I would LOVE to have our family photos taken by her... maybe one day.

3. Zak Schwank ... I admire him for paying it forward and giving me the chance to dive into the photography world. I can honestly say if Zak didn't ask me to be part of the group shoot... I would only be photographing my kids at this point.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am a stay at home mom... and I work a couple days a week at Keyways Vineyard & Winery. Love it!!!

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

My mom owned a stained glass business when I was in high school and taught me then how to do glass. A couple years ago when I was changing over from full time worker to stay at home mom... I asked my brother to build me a stained glass table. It's one of my favorite creative outlets... to go out to the garage and build stained glass windows for our home. A day without creativity just doesn't seem like an okay day at all to me.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I would love to see a cure for cancer... all cancers. Cancer sucks!

1. Look out my home window and see the ocean looking back at me.

2. Photograph my kids playing outside in the green grass with their kids.

3. Be able to call myself a professional photographer and let my passion be my career.

1. Work in some way with Michelle's Place (a local breast cancer resource center) using my photography as service

It's rare when she doesn't jump into the ocean in 2.2 seconds...

so her standing at the edge was surely a fleeting moment.

This was the first time at the beach for my son. He loved it!!!

He crawled all over the place like a little crab! :)

I am finding that one of my favorite things to photograph are flowers.

I love the colors.. the new growth... the detail.

My all time favorite photo! My mom is holding my son while my daughter, Bella, & my sister, Hanna, play off in the distance in the ocean. Side note: My daughter is 6... my sister is 10.

My mom started over 20 years later! :) This one is priceless to me!

Currently I have a Nikon D50, 28-80, 50 1.8, 70-300, SB 600 flash, 2 Wescott strobes, and 2 radio triggers.

I am in the process of rebuilding my bag now so hopefully soon my bag will have;

Nikon d300s, either sigma 24-70 2.8 or tamron 17-50 2.8, and a 30 1.4 would be a good start. I also would not mind a tamron 70-200 2.8 in that bag as well. The bag itself would probably be an Jill E or Epiphanie.

What's your favorite editing software?

Photoshop CS3 is currently what I use the most although I will return to Elements 5 for quick edits from time to time. I have recently been playing with Lightroom 3 and I believe it has stolen my heart as my go to software.

Favorite Food?

Thai Food! Love it, love it. I could probably eat it everyday!

Favorite Color?

Well that’s a hard question because it is ever changing! It is different for my home, than it is for my clothing attire. It also changes based on my mood and the season. I am a color girl, but I tend to love warmer colors. In my home I love burnt reds,browns, yellows, greens and even blues. However, I tend to dress in solid colors wearing a lot of black, brown, blues, pinks, and oranges. How’s that for a combination?

A few of your favorite things?

Warm weather & sunshine. Chap Stick is a must, they are stashed all around my house and car! Minerals Makeup is a must these days. It’s just enough without being too much. Learning something new, almost anything will do. I live in Sketchers Sneakers and a Jog suit when I am just hanging around the house. However, I love beautiful shoes, coats, & purses worn of course with a sexy dress! I love going to furniture stores and browsing furniture accessories. I love, love playing with photoshop editing pictures to obtain different looks. I also really love museums. I also enjoy painting. Oh yeah, and lets not forget about the perpetual picture taking.

What or who inspires you?

My mother inspires me. She has such a great outlook on life. My kids inspire me. They inspire me to keep trying to be the best me I know how to be. My husband truly inspires me. His love, hard work and dedication to our family combined with his outlook on life are a reminder to me every day. The things he has overcome to be the person he is, continues to show me the awesomeness of Jesus Christ in our lives!

This may sound silly but it is Chap Stick! I can barely walk around the house without it in my pocket.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

As a teenager and young adult, I always took pictures. Our house was robbed one year and I found many of my baby pictures destroyed in the snow covered woods behind our home and it mad me really sad. I did not want to ever be cheated of my documented memories ever again. Along with that my mom always took a ton of pictures. I have always been somewhat creative and artsy. However, I was always taught that when you go to college, you are to come out with and get a “real” job or career. Photography or anything artsy, was never considered as a viable real option. So that’s what I did. I put the camera down somewhere in college and focused on my “real future”. Little did I know then, that was probably the beginning of a slow death for me.

Fast forward ten plus years to when I got my first slr from my husband after having our first child! I was in heaven again snapping away every moment of my little ones life. He had challenges as a baby so capturing every moment was essential for me. I was once again in my happy place other than being tired and exhausted from motherhood and doctors appointments for my little guy. Then my daughter came. She too had some issues initially, so more doctors appointments. I think the slr got too heavy to carry & printing my millions of pictures became too expensive for our tight budget. So again life got in the way and I put the camera down.

One day a few years later, while visiting some friends who had a new daughter, and a budding photography hobby, I felt inspired inside. I also realized that I now had a TON of pictures of my son, and quite a few less of my daughter. I was sad, yet awakened as I realized that I still loved the sight of fleeting moments caught by the camera embedded on paper. It struck my heart like a lost love. For all the years of my marriage, my husband would say “ I only want you to do what you love to do, because you love to do it!” I spent years trying different things for different reasons, but it was not until that moment at my friends that I realized what that actually was. When I dug out my old slr, it was as though I had come home. About, three years ago, for Christmas, my hubby sent me to get my Nikon dslr and we have been constant companions every since. I actually never considered doing this professionally until last Fall. Although, many who saw my pictures wondered why I would not pursue it professionally because they loved my images, I was simply not ready to commit. I also really wanted to hold on to the shear joy of shooting just for pleasure. Since I am a homeschooling mom, it was and still is really important to me that nothing infringed on my time educating my children and being present with my family. When I saw MeRa’s Scholarship…it was the first time that I thought maybe it was possible. So now I am taking the steps in that direction. They may be baby steps, but they are steps never-the-less.

On a side note: I found my high school and college photo albums this summer and cracked up as I looked through them with my kids. They also got to see me as a child, their ages from the pictures my mom took, and it was precious! It was exactly as I had hoped it would be one day.

I have not officially started taking business yet. I am still portfolio building although I hope to open officially by the beginning of May.

I have a few. MeRa Koh for one. I love her heart for women in this business & women finding their way in general. Carey Shumacker, next because of the way she has been able to intergrate the business into her family, not the other way around.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

Besides photography, I am a wife and full-time mom, homeschooling two children ages 11 & 9.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I am also learning how to trade in the stock market, figure out this blogging thing, and learning anything else that I can get my hands on. I also like to plan vacations and travel with my family. I used to really enjoy reading a good book, but now I really only enjoy it if it is teaching me something new.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Not at this time.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Racism and social injustice for sure and the labeling of children in our school system.

Any type of cruelty towards humans or animals should stop. Especially human trafficking, slavery and any kind of abuse. It is just so sad!

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1) See the 7 Wonders of the World

2) See my children grown up, happy and living fulfilled lives. Prayerfully, that would include contributing to society in a very meaningful way.

3) Myself & my husband to accomplish the things that God has destined for us to do.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1) Officially begin my photography business and be profitable.

2) Be confident and satisfied within myself that I am exactly who and where God wants me to be.

3) That I have a system in place that ensures all that I need to do in a way that is most effective for all who will be affected.

I love this because I captured a rare public display of affection between my kiddos.

I call it “a rare moment .”

I love her expression and the excitement she had being on this carousel. It was effortless.

While technically this is probably not the best shot, I still love it because they are having fun.

I also love the reflection of the floor in their glasses.

This was taken at the same location our wedding pictures were taken ten years before.

Currently in my bag is my Canon Digital Rebel XTi, the 18-55mm 3.5 kit lens which I never use, my 50mm 1.8 prime lens which is what true love is all about (it's less than $100 people, go get one!), and a marvelous 10-22mm 3.5-4.5 wide angle lens which is so fun to play with. I also have a few tripods, a gorilla pod (which I rarely use!), a remote which is great because it allows me to be in photos more easily and also for doing other crazy projects like self-portraits and long exposures with no camera shake.

What do I want to add? Hmmmmm...is there a spending limit?? I'd really love to upgrade camera bodies, but I'm not sure if I want a monster like something in the Canon Mark series or something smaller like the Canon 7D. And it's not like I have to worry right now...by the time I can afford one there will be something new and shiny out! As for lenses I'd like to upgrade to the 50mm 1.4 and I need a great telephoto, but not sure on this one either! Also some fun trick lenses like a Lensbaby would be neat to play with, maybe even a fisheye.

What's your favorite editing software?

Lightroom all of the way! I love it and while I'm pretty good at it, I know there is so much more to learn. I also like Photoshop CS2 for other processing that I can't do in Lightroom- like for creating diptychs, blog headers, Christmas cards, etc...

Favorite Food? I'm having a ridiculous love affair with Hollandaise sauce right now!

Favorite Color? Can I say all of them? If I have to choose....I'd say hot pink. It's fun, feisty, and wild. Kinda like me. ;)

A few of your favorite things?

Tiny art- I have this great collection of small, original pieces of art and the smaller the better. As a matter of fact I love original art period. Something about owning a one-of-a-kind piece of someone's heart and soul is really special. I also love art supplies, but have no real talent for it, aside from photography of course, but I like to dabble every now and then. Other favorites- really delicious food and eating experiences that are more like out of body experiences, cheese of all kinds, good wine. On a non-food related note, I love cuddling with my husband in bed on weekend mornings...those wonderful, warm, sleepy moments before I think of all the stuff I want or need to do. It's heaven!

What inspires you?

Right now I'm really gobbling up all I can of other photographers- taking in their work and style, filing it away for inspiration later. Seeing what others do makes me want to try my hand at the same thing, not that I'm trying to achieve their exact effect, but I love how it ends up leading me down this creative path where I end up somewhere very different from where I started in my mind. It's a great catalyst that propels me forward and helps me to learn. I'm also really inspired by colors and light, both of which I'd like to learn to photograph better, so I'm always really impressed when I see someone who can capture them so well. Emotions also play a big part of my photography. When I look at a scene and am filled with happiness, sadness, excitement, or wonder, I want to freeze that and share it with others. It's a great success to share a raw, real feeling with another person through a photo.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

Laughter. I am not a serious person, in fact I'm quite lewd and crude and have this really bizarre sense of humor. So, I like to make others laugh and like to laugh a lot myself by being goofy and crazy. Oh, yeah and a hug and kiss from my hunk-o-man-meat. :D

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Okay why do I feel like I'm applying for college all over again? :) I really realized that I wanted to pursue photography during the SOAR! Scholarship. At first I was kind of "whatever" about it and sent in my application and video (back when there were only 21 entries) and thought that it would be cool if I won, and if not...oh well. But as time went on, with more and more amazing women signing up, I really started to dream about what it would be like to take my photography to the next level. It came to a point where I realized that a snowball had a better chance in hell then I had a chance at winning the scholarship and it made me a bit sad. But more surprisingly, it made me really, really mad. I got angry because it was insane to allow my life and my future to be dictated by a single event. I realized that no one has more control over my life than me, and if I wanted to do this all I had to do was reach out and grab it. So, from then on I started to plan my launch for the very second the winners were announced. I had not only realized that I wanted photography as a business, but that I didn't need someone to hand it to me in order to have it- I'd had the ability to do it myself all along. D'oh!

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

Oh...how about EVERYTHING! Wow...there is so much to do! Firstly, and I think most importantly, I got my family and friends involved. I've been so surprised by how people have totally gone out of their way to make suggestions, offer services, and even just to say "congrats" and offer their support. And the support has been tremendous- without it I know I couldn't last for a week. Of course there's been blogging and social networking so I can begin to create a following of people and a presence on the web. Setting up a SmugMug account so people can really see what I'm about. I guess that falls under the header of Shameless Pimping. There's also a lot of talking my friends into letting me shoot them and their significant others/families so I can build my portfolio. Pricing has been a monster and unfortunately there is no magic bullet that will answer it for you. And the little things like ordering business cards, registering my domain name, reading up, checking photog blogs (it rhymes!), forums, and ..... I'm pooped just thinking about it!

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Right now I'm pretty in love with Kat Speyer of Persimmon Images . Although, she doesn't know it yet! I'll probably contact her in the near future to profess my love. She has a look and feel to her image/brand that I would like to achieve some day. Her photos are full of light, tell amazing and emotional stories, and she's got a really great eye for detail and interest. *sigh*

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

Besides being Queen of the Universe (no, seriously.) I work for the State of Maryland as a Natural Resource Planner. I really do love my job and especially my co-workers. Not only am I using my degree in Marine Resource Management, but I'm helping to protect the Chesapeake Bay. It's a nice feeling when you can look back and count the good things you've done by the acre. :)

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Let's see...I used to scrapbook- like the 12x12 albums with all the paper and crazy embellishments- but have given that up in favor of a more clean, modern look using Kolo products. My husband and I are also Netflix junkies. I also love to cook and share food with others.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Nope! My plate is overflowing at this point!

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Oh, man...so many things. It's hard to choose because every story on the news and amazing cause wrenches my heart. There is so much that needs to be done for other humans, animals, the environment- it's really daunting when you think about it. I'd have to say that I'd want every one to have the desire to give just a little more of themselves then they did before. Time, money, compassion...it doesn't really matter, but if everyone just did even 1% more than they were, the cumulative effect would be huge. And after all, it's human power that is going to change things, right?

Name three things you would like to do before you die:

1. Become a mother. The idea both enthralls me and freaks me out! But I know it will be wonderful. :)

2. Eat something so good it makes me cry. I've been close...but not quite!

3. Do more art, give more love, live life more full and balanced. Essentially live a happy, full life with no regret.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. Turn a profit. I'm hard pressed to put a number down, but if I can make $0.01 more than I spent that would be a good first year.

2. Continue blogging regularly and maintain the interest of my readers, while helping them to grow and achieve their own goals.

3. Make each of my clients feel like a superstar who not only received a beautiful set of portraits that they are connected to emotionally, but also received superior service and care. I want them coming back for more!!

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

This is one of my most recent photos and was taken during a shoot with my good friend Mariah and her dog Bodie. The reason I love it so much is that when I look at it I can imagine seeing it on another photographer's site (you know...a "real" photographer) and thinking to myself, "Wow, that's really good! I'd pay for that!".

This is a photo of my uncle (he's from Texas, can you tell?) that I snapped over Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania. There's so much about this image for me, it's hard to explain. It's simple and clean in black and white with an uncluttered background, but there's a lot of mood and story there too. And besides that, it captures him perfectly. It's just him in a quiet, uncluttered moment- his essence captured for all time.

And that's what making a good portrait is about.

I can't really adequately relay how much I love this photo. Everything was perfect from the lighting, the angle of the roadside, the timing... And what's most amazing is that I had no control over any of it- I just hung the camera out of the window of the truck and pushed the shutter button! Again, it gets back to capturing light and emotion and this one is just very evocative of both for me.

This is by no means my best work, but it is my first work and that's what makes it so meaningful. This is one of the first photos I took after buying my DSLR and it's also the first time I used manual. It's also my first submission for my first 365 that I took. So, it really represents a new turn in my photography and the start of my journey, even when I had no idea that this is where I'd end up!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I have always had a special place in my heart for photography and growing up all my friends called me paparazzi because everywhere I went, I brought my little yellow disposable camera! I think I must have purchased enough of those to fill up an entire state! But after a while, I got busy with “work” and put my passions to the side for years! When I met my husband, I met my soul mate. He was so creative and he helped me bring back my creativity and integrate it into our daily lives. He showed me that you don’t have to see creativity as a distraction. He loves photography just as much as I do. When he graduated with his Master’s degree I got him his first DSLR (the Nikon D60). Little did I know that it would be parked in a corner for months because now he was too busy with “work” to play with it. Seeing the camera so lonely, I decided to take it out to play. That’s it! I was hooked and I knew that whatever I decided to do in life, it would be with a camera by my side.

If you already have photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

My husband works full time at a university and I am a full time student at another university and with our two children we thought we would never be able to open a business for our photography passion. But late last year, we jumped in with our sleeves rolled up and I am so thankful to God we did. This journey is just starting, but it has been an amazing experience so far and we look forward to all of God’s blessings and wonderful surprises he has in store for us!!

We do lifestyle and journalistic style photography that includes weddings, portraits, birthdays, boudoir, events, and any other category that we can experiment with! If there is a face, we are on it! J My favorite part of photography is catching those unexpected expressions!

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I have so many favs, this is the hardest question on here! But I truly love Mark Eric’s work. I love the uniqueness, colors, ideas, and I can keep on going!! He is a huge source of inspiration!

Besides photography, what else do you do, i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am a full time mom, wife, and student at the University of Tampa. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s in Communication with a minor in journalism. I plan to merge that with my passion for photography and travel the world! ;)

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I love reading books and bike riding but I must admit that with my schedule and responsibilities I don’t have time to do either as much as I would like.

I love retouching images and if I wasn’t a photographer I think I could be a full time retoucher very easily! It really relaxes me when I edit images. The computer screen is my canvas and I am creating my art!

I love networking, meeting new people, making friends and enjoying our time together!

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Nope, when I graduate though, I do plan to merge what I studied with photography and follow a career path in that manner. I can’t wait to see how our business will evolve over time and to look back and see where and how we started!

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I have two bad combos that I would LOVE to change! I am impatient at times and procrastinate (especially with school work)! I rather be taking pictures or editing and I need to tell myself about 50 billion times a day that I must focus and stay on track!

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Visit Jerusalem

Live my life in a way that when I die, I will be remembered as making some awesome changes for humanity (or at least trying) ;)

Do something completely WILD (along the lines of running in the middle of NY completely naked at the age of 90) haha! Yep, I want to live a long time! ;-)

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Document a wedding in Dubai!!!

For our work to be featured in a magazine, ahhhh that would be dreamy!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Photography was a hobby of my dad's (who died when I was 7), but I always looked through his Time Life books on photography as a child. Photography was a hobby for one of my best friends in high school and

we'd often spend time on a weekend with my being a model for my friend who was trying to learn and hone photography as an art. And then it was a hobby for my husband before I ever met him. My life has been surrounded by photography since a very young age. And although I always loved taking pictures (I got my first 110 camera in elementary school), I never took it seriously until about 5 years ago.

My husband was given an anonymous gift of a Canon digital rebel XTi and I wanted to learn how to use it. I was afraid of manual settings, but loved learning composition. Then about 3 years ago I struck up a

friendship with someone who was starting her own photography business, who convinced me that shooting in manual wasn't as scary as it seemed. She showed me the basics and I was hooked.

I bought some books, was given my current camera for my birthday (my husband was grateful to get his camera back) and couldn't get enough. Then, in the summer of last year I read a book called Crazy Love. It

challenged me on so many levels, but mainly on how I use my resources for God instead of just myself. And I realized that, honestly we don't have any margin in our budget for God (beyond what is already written

in the budget.) I mean, if my neighbor lost her job and couldn't put groceries on the table, I wouldn't be in a position to help very much.

I prayed about how that could change for my family and Exposing Grace is one of the answers to that prayer. I use at least 1/2 of everything I make (and as we replace my husband's income from his 2nd job it will be exponentially more than 1/2) to help others. My focus is on the poor, orphans and single moms, but I will use it for whatever God asks me to use for. I am just in the beginning steps of this venture and am

incredibly intimidated by everything there is to do, but I am excited to see what God has in store for it as I follow Him.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I had my first paying job in September - 2 boudoir shoots. I love photographing people, but the process of "Portraiture" is very intimidating to me. I don't feel like I'm very creative in that aspect. If I could just follow a family around for the day and capture them living and loving, that would be ideal for me. I am really finding a love for infant photography too and I have had the opportunity to take lots of newborn pictures lately. I did several family portraits at Christmas and designed Christmas cards for those families. I've photographed 2 weddings for friends. I've also done some event style photography for First 5 of Kings County - photographing their classes and making some promotional DVD slide shows for them, which has been SOOOO much fun; and also for the WISH Foundation, who provides clean water, food and health supplies to people in third world countries.

I'm really at the place of learning still and know NOTHING about marketing. And since I'm following God in this, I take what He brings me and try to learn from it and be my best so He'll bring more. There is a verse in the Bible (Luke 16:10) that says, "If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities." Right now, I'm just trying to be faithful with the little things.

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

My business is officially started, but I'm dreaming about growing it. I'm continuing to hone my skill by reading books and practicing what I learn so that I will help be more instinctual behind my camera. I take LOTS of pictures. And now I'm researching some of the business stuff. I think I need to file to get not-for-profit status for Exposing Grace, so I'm working on figuring that out. I'm also working on getting business cards. Nope, I haven't even done that yet. Thanks to Meghan (www.meghansenkelphotography) though, I have a discount for Moo cards, which I plan on ordering the first week of March.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I love the works of Cliff Mautner (how he sees light is amazing); Kamee June (she has such a fun laid back style); Nate & Jaclyn Kaiser (they push the bar and are never satisfied with not learning and growing and challenging themselves - and that encourages me). The thing is, there are lots of great photographers out there. But not a whole lot of MeRa Kohs, which is why she is my absolute FAVORITE. Yes, she is an amazing photographer, but more importantly to me, she is an INCREDIBLE human being with an AMAZING gift (and I believe calling) to encourage and help others. If I can impact just a small fraction of the amount of people she has been given the gift of impacting, I will consider myself successful.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am the worship leader at my church. On occasion, I have to opportunity to sing at different events. I used to sing with a swing band on a regular basis - oh how I miss that. The best job I ever had was singing for the Disney Company on board the Queen Mary as a part of their regular atmosphere entertainment during their "Voyage to 1939".

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I love to read and sew, and play my guitar. I also love to play with my kids and be their biggest fan as they play baseball (or soccer, or basketball). AND I can occasionally be found playing a mean game of Phase 10 with my friends. I know it's not a typical hobby, but I love just hanging out with a good friend over a great cup of coffee having an amazing time catching up on each other's lives.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I just started a photography worship community called Through the Lens of Worship. I envision one day being able to sell images that come from the community and giving 100% of the profits to charities that help the poor, orphans, or single moms.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I would love to be able to stop social injustice. My heart breaks for those who are victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1. Record a worship album

2. Start an adoption fund to help couples defray the cost of adoption.

3. Go to Greece

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. Grow the community at Through The Lens of Worship

2. Take care of the legalities involved with being a not-for-profit business

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

I struggled with how to go about this, but in the end I chose pictures of my kids because, although they aren't the "best" pictures I have taken, they are the ones I look at all the time, thus my FAVORITE. These are the pictures of my kids that capture the essence of who they are.

This is my oldest son, taken after baseball practice - his favorite thing to do.

I love the raw emotion of this image. It wasn't posed. He didn't even know I was taking it because

I was not near him and was using the zoom lens.

My middle child. He is such a joy in our lives and I believe this picture accurately portrays

his fun-loving spirit.

This image is of my daughter, who is already - at the age of 2 -

independent and sassy, yet loving and sensitive.

What I love most about this image is what was captured in the blurry background.

I love the expression on my daughter's face. She LOVES her big brother and didn't care that he was squeezing her head and covering her eyes - she was getting kisses!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I came to photography is a rather roundabout way. Back is 2000 I was living in Seattle and getting divorced. I was also preparing to move to Dallas to get a fresh start. My husband (a graphic designer) gave me a disk with Photoshop on it and said "You should play with this." I was not an artist, not a photographer, not a crafter. I sometimes made weird collages for myself and friends and family. My whole studio apartment was one big collage of vintage clothes, magazine cutouts, and fairy lights. I was always being mistaken for an artist (I dressed weird) - but was most definitely NOT one. I didn't even own a camera at the time.

So when I made the move to Dallas I bought a camera, a Photoshop book, and started shooting and editing photos. Those first few images are still some of my favorites. I mostly used my highly photoshopped images in mixed media pieces - I sold work on Ebay and had some success with that. A whole lot of life happened between 2000 and 2006. I moved from Seattle to Dallas to New Orleans to Dayton, OH to Princeton, WV to Albuquerque. I went from being a career freight operations manager to being a graphic designer. I went from divorced to married to divorced to married again. And I became a mother. Let's just say art and photography were put on the backburner for several years.

In 2006 I participated in a yearlong project with a group of local artists. We each created one piece a week for the entire year. We met and checked in with each other once a month. For my part I decided to give myself the additional challenge of working in one theme or medium each month. December of 2006 I decided to create 4 new photographic images - no mixed media - just the images themselves. And through that experience I decided to focus on photography. We had a gallery show displaying our work from the project in March 2007. And I bought my Rebel xti that same month.

What I love about the art of photography - to me photography is not about capturing a moment – it is about capturing emotions and creating visual allegories. I believe that is why I’m drawn to photo collage as it allows me to assemble and edit images to create a story. I love sitting at my computer and layering disparate images on top of each other – until something leaps out of the screen at me – and I recognize the story these images are trying to tell me. Also, looking over the images that I love and speak to me the most I seem to hover on the darker side of life. I love things that simultaneously break my heart with their emotional context and lift me up with their unmistakable beauty. And when I see those things I point my camera and shoot.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I don't have a photography business, per se. I sell my work in the gallery I own and have shown and sold my work is several venues around Albuquerque. This is this year I am going to work on creating a serious portrait and commercial portfolio and begin a commercial business.

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

I am actively seeking out people and families to shoot to build up a commercial portfolio, and I looking to buy more equipment this year. I also plan to get a portfolio website up within the month.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I have several photographers I admire - my faves being Jack Delano who shot for the Farm Service Administration and Silvia Plachy, whose book Signs and Relics is a continuous source of inspiration. My favorite active photographer is David DuChemin.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I'm a graphic designer/production person at a local sign shop and I co-own an art gallery - The Wooden Cow Gallery and Art Space. This year I have also started a website to support New Mexico artists - http://www.nmartistconnection.com/. And I started and run an artist trading cards group in Albuquerque.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I love music - I used to book bands for a club in Seattle back in the 90s. I love my kids and my husband and we love to go on roadtrips and explore New Mexco. And I love to read - mostly biographies - truth is stranger and more interesting than fiction.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I also do freelance design work.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Everyone in the world would have access to adequate healthcare for free. Healthcare is a basic human right.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Live in Spain, watch my children grow up and prosper in their chosen avocations, own an art gallery (check that one off the list!)

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Get paid to do a commercial shoot.

Get published

Jury into some fine art shows

Reflecting Pool

This image is of the abandoned ATSF railyards in downtown Albuquerque. I love the railyards for their architecture, their innate dignity, and their history. Albuquerque was a small town on the way to Santa Fe before ATSF decided to build their regional mechanics shops here in 1880. The building in the photograph was built in 1920. This was a huge boon to the local economy - at one point 1/4 of the Albuquerque workforce was employed by ATSF. If they had not made their decision to locate the shops here - Albuquerque as we know it would not exist today. The other part of this photograph that I love is the digital "reflection" that makes it look like water is rising inside the buildings. I added that because I fear if nothing is done to preserve this buildings soon they will be swallowed up in decay and I wanted to show that without being too literal.

Love Letters

Love letters is a composite of several images taken of a row of mailboxes in Galisteo, NM.

I love it's dreamlike quality.

Beauty

Captured at a Dia de Los Muertos parade this year,

"Beauty" celebrates the amazing culture of New Mexico and the beauty of it's people.

Silent Songs

This image is one of a large series I have done melding glass negatives from 1910-1920 with my photography. I own over 300 of these negatives and they are all from one studio that operated in downtown Albuquerque during that time. I bought these through a local artist who had no idea of their origin. Through research I feel I have identified the studio that took them and found that the owner was a woman, Mrs. Eddie (Edwina) Ross Cobb. Her father, Edmund G. Ross, was a Territorial Governor of NM, and was one of the people profiled in JFK's Profiles in Courage. Her husband, William Cobb, was a photographer and surveyor who came out to NM while working for the ATSF. When he died she took over the photography business. These photographs are an obsession of mine. Some of them have names written on them and I have actually tracked down descendants of some of the people in them. They have added a layer of "connectedness" to my life and to my love of New Mexico.

Most of the glass negatives have some level of water damage to them, apparently they were stored in a shed for several years. The one in "Silent Songs" was so damaged that most of the image was wiped away, leaving only the woman's eyes and top of her head. But her eyes spoke volumes to me, so I overlaid and image of a lock around her and she became "Silent Songs". I also wrote a poem about the image.

What inspires you?

Abandoned homes, Dying fields, a rusted barn. I find that once I am behind the lens my emotions start to kick in and I just go for what comes from within.

Coffee, Facebook, and Diet Dr. Pepper. and makeup... I have a huge collection and even if it's just
mascara I have to have it!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I have been shooting for about 7 months with my business, I bought my first camera about 2 years ago and was asked by tons of friends if I would shoot them. It went from there. I am trying to go back to being the photographer I love being and just shooting and trying not to think too much on the business accepts. I am a certified bookkeeper by day and help run a family business, I work for my sister; but photography allows me to let out my creativity and emotions I try to express.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

7 months with a name... just having a name alone isn't the only thing I need, (just realizing this) I love shooting teens and adults. I like to incorporate drama along with a vintage feel i.e. rusted barn or railroad tracks. I find getting a name out there is much harder if you are like me with limited funds. I have been redoing my portfolio after finding what I really love to capture... DRAMA!

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

Marketing, Marketing. Reading about other photogs and how easy it was for them to just succeed from the get go is gut wrenching when I do my best to grab the attention of those I aspireto shoot!

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Gina Kolsrud her work is filled with drama and love the mood she sets in them. If you haven't checked her out she's one photog I wish to be like when I grow up :P

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer,volunteer?

Work full time as a bookkeeper and mommy. I love going out to dinner with my family. I mean the whole family.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Tons of crafty things at home to keep me busy when I can't shoot, I crochet, make t-shirts, rhinestone flip flops pretty much anything crafty I am all about.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I also started a freelance makeup artist company 3 years ago which never really launched. In most of my recent work I have done everything from makeup to hair and selecting the wardrobe. I really love putting on a shoot! Glamor is where my heart melts!

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I wish the US economy was better and many people weren't without a home or on the verge of losing a home. It has to turn around right?

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Visit Europe, watch my daughter go to college, and renew my 50th wedding vows with my husband.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Gain tons of exposure and would love to be known in the industry.

I have a Canon 50d body and the following lenses: 18-200 f/2.8 (I LOVE this one!!), a 50mm f/1.8, a 17-70mm macro, and a 70-300mm which I love for photographing my sons' sporting events. I also have a bunch of little extras like polarizing filters, extra cards and batteries, external flashes, a battery grip...the accessories are fun and neverending!! I would really love a nice ball head tripod though....

Favorite Food?

I grew up in New Mexico so I love my Northern New Mexican food...anything with red or green chile will make me drool but I especially love Chile Works burritos and stuffed sopaipillas. And I believe everything tastes better with avocado and/or Sadie's Salsa

A few of your favorite things?

my body. putting on warm clothes straight from the dryer...cleaning my ears with q-tips (I know weird, huh? but I love it!!), massages, sharpies, notebooks (Office Depot is my candy store)

What or who inspires you?

My mom. She grew up in less than ideal circumstances, and rather than fall into the same pattern and make excuses for her shortcomings, she worked hard and succeeded and became the most tremendous person. I see that she achieved so much after coming from so little and this inspires me to be the best that I can be also.

Name something you just have to have everyday: coffee!!

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I had a friend who had all of these amazing photos of her daughter. I had lots of pictures of my boys also, but they didn't compare. I wanted great ones too. So I went out completely blind to what I was doing and bought a DSLR. I also bought the book Understanding Exposure. I self taught myself how to take better photos and was on my way. Through this process I discovered that I don't really love posing my boys - I would much rather capture them in the moment. There are so many moments in their lives that I am afraid I will forget...the little things like facial expressions or how they interacted with certain toys. I made it my mission to capture these moments on 'film' and then went from there...and couldn't stop!!

I am just getting started!! I am in the process of building up Life's Stories Photography. I am right now specializing in families and children and have a partnership with a friend where we are hoping to shoot

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Obviously, Me Ra...she is such an inspiration both in her photography and outside of it. I love how she empowers women and encourages us to have confidence and be the best that we can do - how she pushes us to step outside the box. Without all of this, I would have never had the courage to take off.

I also LOVE Teresa Earnest from Memories 'n' More Photography in Savannah, Ga. She will be my wedding photographer in March and is terrific! I love her eye for capturing the special moments. Teresa did a photo session for my fiance, my sons, and me back in October and she was so fun to work with. She made our experience so much fun - the boys loved her!!. This is what I strive to make my photography like - fun!!

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am a special education teacher for middle school students with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. I work at an alternative school that serves these students and students with autism from grades K-12. It is challenging, but I love it!!

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I am an avid runner. I have run several half marathons and am training for my first marathon (by the time I am 'spotlighted' I should have finished it!!). I also love to read. Chick lit is my favorite but I enjoy all genres.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I see too many of my students who have terrible home lives. They have witnessed things that I cannot even begin to imagine...yet it is a reality for them. They suffer terribly for it. I believe that every child deserves a fighting chance - an environment where they can thrive and achieve their highest potential. I wish so much that no child had to endure these hardships and that all could be blessed to have the loving family that I had growing up.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1. visit Macchu Picchu

2. run a marathon (although by the time this is published, I should have done this - so make it a triathlon!!)

3. see my sons grow up to be successful and happy

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. shoot my first wedding

2. take time to enjoy my first year of marriage

3. make it to the end of the year with no credit card debt!!!

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

This is my son, Julian. He is 3 years old and is still a thumb sucker. We decided that

we needed to get him to stop sucking his thumb by his 4th birthday. I know it is not a

healthy habit for him, yet I find it irresistible. I want to treasure this sweetness

before it goes away.

Adrian is a little guy. He is the smallest kid in his class and was the smallest guy

on his soccer team. I love how this never stops him. He shows such strength and aggression

on the field and I love how this photograph captures this.

I went to my uncle's house for Thanksgiving last year. After running a 4K together, the family went outside in the courtyard and did yoga (you gotta love Florida weather in November!!).

I love the pose and the look in Elena's face as she does Warrior pose.

Her facial expression is just perfect zen for the yoga!

Driftwood Beach is my favorite place to go. I go there with the boys to play around and also by myself when I need time to unwind. One night I headed out there and I was the only person aside from this family who was out crabbing. I love the silhouettes of this picture in front of the vibrant sunset. I don't know why this photo grabs at me so much, but it does. I just love it.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

Like many others..my husband bought me my first digital SLR after the birth of our second child. I fell in love with taking photos of them..everything. Instead of taking classes I read and read and read..everything! And I shot and shot and shot many pictures. I read my manual several times...It was instinctual and after that I knew that I wanted to pursue this as something more.

A Day In Your Life is my photography business. I consider myself a modern lifestyle photographer. Mainly children and families..maternity..newborn..I second shot a few weddings last year and am really focusing on that this year. I always say I am still in the process of launching it because it is a never-ending process. And with 4 little ones at home the process can be slow going.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I happened upon Mera's site at the beginning of my journey and I have to say that as a mentor she is amazing! Her style I love as well..mostly natural light..photojournalistic feel..not alot of post-processing

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am a stay at home mom to a 5, 4 and two 1 year old boys. Any extra time is devoted to photography..

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Running..reading..travelling..I have to laugh because there is really not alot of extra time for any of those!

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Poverty and everything that goes along with it..it is an unfortunate thing that money makes alot of the world go round. I hate the fact that people are not afforded the same opportunities as others because of the dollars they do not have in their bank accounts.

Get published! Somewhere..anywhere

Marketing! Getting my name out there..

Weddings. I would love to book more weddings..so I need to focus on that in terms of marketing

Last year between giving birth to twins..two boys starting school..training for a marathon..I felt like I was totally neglecting my two oldest Sam and Max. Before the twins arrived I would have Sam and Max out and about with me constantly (camera in hand!). This trip to the beach was the first time after the twins arrived that we had some quality alone time..and I just love how these photos turned out!

What inspires you?

I love taking ordinary and making it extraordinary. Raw everyday emotion and every day things really inspire me. I love being able to capture the simplest moment in time and then take that moment and transform it into art.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

Coffee. Just one cup, but it's the only way to start my morning right.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I used to HATE taking pictures. Yep, you heard me right - I hated it! Then last year a friend inspired me to start a project called 365 where you take a photo a day for an entire year and post each of them daily to share. I wanted to learn to love my camera more, especially since my husband and I were planning on starting a family. I wanted awesome picture of our child-to-be. So I started 365 and it was addicting. There was a whole community on the flickr.com site just waiting to encourage and inspire me. It was amazing! Fast forward a bit and I got pregnant, became terribly ill with morning sickness and couldn't bear to take photos. So 365 ended but I left the project knowing I'd be inspired to shoot again once our baby arrived.

Unfortunately 4 months into the pregnancy we got some terrible news. Our baby was extremely ill and she didn't even make it to 20wks. She was born sleeping when I was 20 weeks pregnant and it turned our life upside down. I turned to my camera for comfort and my blog "Bella Rose Photography" was born. After 2 months of blogging friends were inspired and moved by my images. I was absolutely flattered to be asked to capture photos for the upcoming holiday season. I quickly whipped up some early pricing options and October - December I booked close to 8 sessions of friends, couples, kids, and newborns.

I think losing our Bella made me realize how important capturing moments is to a family. I love turning ordinary moments in to art, and I love that Bella showed me how something so tragic for our family was able to be turned around into a blessing.

I am in the early stages of building my photography business. I imagine starting the business as primarily a family event and portraiture business, but weddings might be somewhere in my future as well. This past fall I started by listing some basic portfolio building sessions, but in 2010 I really want to take things to the next level.

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

Right now I am just taking classes when I can, networking, and shooting shooting shooting! I think the only way to get better and really perfect my craft is to just get out there and shoot.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

It may seem silly but I follow my wedding photographers pretty religiously (http://worthington-photography.com/blog/). They are a husband and wife team and we've always appreciated their laid back personalities and natural candid style. Even though I am not shooting weddings yet I really find that their style falls in line with where I want to go and what I want to attain as a photographer.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

My day job is as a Technology Resource Teacher. I work in a K-5 elementary school teaching students and teachers the best way to utilize technology and incorporate it into 21st century learning. I get to play with computers, laptops, interactive whiteboards, cameras, and other multimedia all day!

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

My husband and I are very community minded so we can often be found doing various service work in and around town.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Nope. Just pursuing the photography for now.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

What a BIG question. So many things are swimming around in my mind to change with our world. But the first thing that comes to mind is an end to childhood hunger. I've seen first hand what the implications are when a child goes hungry and I feel strongly that this is something we all need to work to end. I've done work with this organization before (http://strength.org/) and really love their mission.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1) Go on a transatlantic cruise through Europe

2) Write and publish a book

3) Develop and teach an online photography e-course

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1) Book and shoot at least 15 photo sessions

2) Develop and teach at least one local photography workshop

3) Start an etsy shop offering some of my work as prints or artistic notecards.

What's in your bag? (if you are building your bag, what do you desire for your bag?)

Nikon D90, 2 Nikon rechargeable batteries, Nikon Grip/Battery Pack, Nikon SB 600 AF Speed Light, Gary Fong Lightsphere II, 2 SanDisk 8GB Extreme III memory cards, and a Nikon remote. As for lenses I have all Nikon lenses which include- 70-300mm AF-S VR Zoom, 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX, 50mm f1.8.

As for what I desire, I am saving up for the 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.4 and of course the Nikon D700. My equipment now would be used for backup because I would love to do weddings and it is so important to have backup!

For studio equipment I own a back drop stand and a few back drops. I prefer using natural light coming through a window but it would also be nice to own a lighting kit for backup.

What's your favorite editing software?

Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 which I will soon be getting once I get my new Macbook Pro for on the road and the iMac for home. I currently have PSE 7 and didn’t want to upgrade till we did the big switch from Windows to Mac

Favorite Food:

Probably anything that is not good for me J I love lobster, all Italian food, my brother in law’s famous chocolate pecan pie. My Grandfathers authentic Swedish pancakes which I have not had in 15 years since he passed away. A good combination pizza from Round Table, Hawaiian Sweet Maui Onion Chips (the best!) and I love, love, love chocolate!!! Especially my Ghirardelli semi sweet chocolate chips.

Favorite Color:

Well it all depends if it’s decorating my house or if I am wearing it. My all time favorite color is pink, loved it since I was little. But now that I am older I love darker colors to wear like black, green, plum and teal. For house colors I love natural colors like bowns, ivory and sage, with a hint of deep reds here and there.

A few of your favorite things:

Going to church and worshipping God, spending time with my wonderful family, Starbucks decaf, soy latte, my Lancôme pressed powder, lip gloss and hand moisturizer, Origins underwear for eyelashes, my Solia flat iron, watching the Steelers win the super bowl, going to Disneyland with the fam, snuggling up under a warm blanket on a cold rainy day while watching a good movie, book stores, first nights sleep after putting on some crisp clean sheets, flip flops, buying cute clothes for my kids, manis & pedis (when I get them as a treat from my husband). Of course photography falls under this category as well J

What and/or Who inspires you?

My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, He is full of mercy and grace. He inspires me to lead a life that is holy and pure. My family inspires me to always do & be the best I can. I am also inspired by my mom for introducing me to photography at such a young age and to my grandmother for introducing the love of art to me. The one thing that inspires me most in photography is a photograph that can tell a beautiful story filled with so much emotion!

Name something you just have to have everyday:

The word of God, prayer, hugs and kisses from my hubby and kids, my blackberry, coffee in the a.m., a little time to connect with friends and family on facebook J , my Lancôme pressed powder, lip gloss and hand moisturizer. Oh and don’t forget food and water, we need that right???

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

It all started when I was a young girl. My mom was into photography and she shared her love of photography with me by taking me out on photo shoots and buying me one of my first real cameras in junior high school. I have loved everything about photography since I could remember. One of many special memories I have is sitting with my grandma for hours upon hours listening to her as she shared her stories life in pictures. I really do love how photos tell a story and they capture moments that you can look back on for years to come.

Over a year ago I started looking into stay at home jobs so I could help out financially in our family. I kept running into dead ends and I realized photography is what I should be doing when God gave me the discernment to do something I had a passion for. That same month I was blessed with my first dslr camera, at that point I knew in my heart this is what I was meant to do.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

My business is Shelley Dee Photography & Artistic Design. Let me tell you the meaning behind my business name. First of all I had a hard time deciding on a name. I wanted something meaningful so I thought Captured Moments, but so many photographers use that. I prayed for God to show me and it was then when I started questioning where my inspiration and love of photography came from. That is when it all came together, “use your name“. Shelley is what my mother named me and Dee is my middle name which stands for Dorothy; my grandmothers name. After figuring out my business name I wanted to add a slogan which is Simply Inspired, I decided on Simply Inspired because God is my true inspiration in life. I then designed my logo which has a big “S” and “D” in it which stands for the two women in my life who inspire me. Susan my mom and Dorothy my grandmother. To top it all off, while creating my logo I realized I could work in Simply Inspired. The “S” being the first letter in “Simply” and the “D” being the last letter in “Inspired”. I love how everything just came together!!!

I love all photography, but as far as my business I am a lifestyle photographer. I love meeting new people so I knew this would be the best for me. I also love capturing life’s everyday and beautifully unique moments for my clients. I get so much joy knowing how happy and excited my clients are when looking at their photos for the first time.

My approach to taking photos of people is to make sure they are having fun and that they are being themselves. In some cases I do like to set up shots for those special occasions like an engagement session, or maybe for a special holiday photo session I will incorporate some fun props. I love fashion as well and that is why I developed that my exclusive photo sessions “Cutie Couture” for girls and “Cool Couture” for boys. For these sessions I offer accessories to give a high fashion look to my clients attire & btw there are NO age limits for these special sessions J I really enjoy taking photos of babies, I love being able to capture them from when they are newborn and follow them in their first year of life that is why I offer my special Le Bebe photos sessions. Babies grow so fast and I believe it is so important to capture these precious moments with your baby while you can!!!

I am in my first year of business and still in the process of building my portfolio.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

Well this for me is sort of tough because I know so many friends who are photographers and I have been so blessed by their willingness to teach what they know, share what they have and inspire me to be the photographer I am today. But if I were to pick one I would have to say Me Ra Koh! Me Ra is such a huge inspiration in the world of photography to me. She is the "Jillian" of photographers, she pushes and challenges you to not give up on your dreams. She is a great mentor and her work is absolutely breath taking! I would love to attend one of her work shops....one day!

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

Besides photography, I am blessed to be able to be a stay at home mom. I love staying home and taking care of our family and house (yes I love to clean). I also homeschool our children, we are going into our 5th year and it works really well for our family. I also help out with my husbands business by doing any graphic designing he needs done or making sure his bookkeeping is staying updated.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

Besides photography enjoy writing and blogging, I love being able to express my feelings by putting them into words on a page or a blog. I love graphic designing. I will never forget my first experience in graphic designing, it was a class I took in high school. I loved it so much it was the one class I didn’t want to end. Since then I have dabbled in doing designing for previous employers and did even more for my husbands business.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Yes, graphic designing. That is why I added “Artistic Design” to my business name. I love designing logos, photo greeting cards, baby announcements, business brochures, fliers for advertising specials and events. As a matter of fact when we move to California my husband wants to open up a marketing firm where he would help businesses with his marketing and business expertise and I could do all the graphic designing. How fun would that be J

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

Any type of cruelty towards humans or animals should stop. Especially human trafficking, slavery and any kind of abuse. It is just so sad!

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Lead others to Christ, train our children in the way they should go and I would love have another baby! I know it says three things, can I add a 4th...my husband has always wanted to go on a cruise. So I would love to get a week alone with my husband on a cruise J

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

3 personal goals is to 1)be a good example to our children. 2)lose weight so I can get healthy enough to have another baby. 3) to not let anything get in my way of my walk with God.

3 business goals is to:

1)develop loyal clientele by implementing a marketing strategy focusing on top of mind awareness.

2) becoming more involved in my community by offering my services to non profit organizations and charities

3) to challenge myself to learn all I can in the photography business by attending workshops, reading literature and keeping up to date with the latest resources and technology.

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

This is one of my first pictures taken with my new dslr and

it happens to be my favorite to this day.

I love this picture not just because she is my niece but I like the composition,

the back light and I love her eyes in this photo.

In this photo I love the feeling of emotion I get and

I really like the side light coming through the window.

The reason I love this photo so much is because I get so much joy out of capturing the pure sweet innocence of a newborn baby...I just love it!

Seeing the love expressed within families. Things like the love of a mother, the caring of brother and sisters, or the tender heart of a father. OR seeing the passion on the face of someone completely enthralled with one of my photos… that can ALWAYS keep me going.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why:

This is kind of funny, well not really so funny… ok scratch the funny… cuz only funny to me doesn’t mean funny to everyone else. (Mental note – PLEASE stop arguing with yourself on paper… its just crazy talk… or type) Ok, back to the question. I was in school taking a biology course. In order to defer my student loans from my associates degree I needed another class to keep me in part time status. I signed up for a photography course because I thought it would be fun. I mean I had been taking photos with my point and shoot and had a passion for capturing the moment. Little did I know how much I was to thoroughly enjoy it. At first I had a feeling of guilt. I was sure that most of my family was going to look down on me for desiring a profession in the arts. After all … its not really work.. right? Something in the back of my head kept telling myself that I should enjoy what I work at anyway. So I kept pressing my professor for information as to where I could find employment in the profession. His answer was to check out some of the local photographers and see if any of them would hire me as an assistant.

I looked around locally and had a hard time finding someone hiring. I went back to my professor and asked him for advice; the best he came up with was for me to check out the PhotoExpo in New York…. It was that weekend. I scrambled to figure out what to do. We had no expendable expenses. I figured if I stayed with friends I could get in on a student pass for 60.00 but I wanted to hear from photographers.

I decided to sign up for a few of the lectures, but only a couple so I could keep expenses down. I saw Joe Buissink and Me Ra Koh. I also saw such passion for photography that upon my return home, I began to think that one really could make a living at this profession, the “they could do it, so I could too” syndrome.

The interest was there, but when Me Ra posted the announcement of SOAR I was immediately in! Admittedly my video was not all that creative. After I submitted it, I backed myself up saying that if I could say out loud that this is what I wanted to do; I could then do it.

If you already have a photography business please tell us about it, type of photography you do, how long you have been doing it, etc...

I do not currently have a photography business, but would love to revisit this question next year.

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

I have decided to obtain an art degree, and enrolled full time to Towson University. I have proposed to many of our friends and family that I do some photography work for them. By signing up for school we had to find a babysitter to watch our son for the very few hours in the day I will be in school. Come to find out she became engaged over the winter break, will be married this summer, and would love for me to take her pictures. By talking to my friends and family I have two other people interested in me taking photos for them. This wont produce income, but it will allow me to build a portfolio, and with it being friends who have no expectations that I have created (I’ve been very upfront explaining my semester in school, but little experience otherwise). I can do it in a fairly low stressful situation.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I have a few. I love Jerry Uelsmann’s hand developed photos. They are surreal, and most are hard to tell that he did NOT use Photoshop. Joe Buissink because of his feeling behind his photography. Last but most certainly NOT least Me Ra Koh because of her vibrancy for photography and an AMAZING mind for business and marketing.

Besides photography, what else do you do, i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am a full time student. I have two rental properties (one is the top floor of my house, so its not to intensive), and I am a full time mom (hubs watches the young one when I am in school). My husband works a full time Mon-Fri 8-5 job, then teaches masters classes at a local university in the evening and now has started his Phd in information security. (we just give up on sleep and breathing, its how we get it all done) But, no, really, we just like to stay very busy.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

My husband and I make homemade …. stuff. We have homemade soap, jewelry, clothing (even my wedding dress was hand sewn by me). Meade…etc

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

My husband and I had a few rental properties. Ok, wait, stay with me. From going though the process of buying and selling houses we have an appreciation for the process, and a new friend in our real estate agent. I have asked her to take pictures of her next couple of houses to see if she likes the photos I take (hence the reason for borrowing the Ultra Wide Angle in my “bag”). Hopefully if all goes well, she will see potential in my work, and promote me to others in her office.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I would like to change the comfort level of those children that struggle with family issues that are above their age level. Divorce, alcoholism, drug abuse, unemployment, separation from siblings, and abuse are some of the issues I dealt with well before I should have as a child. For any one child that I help though a time such I feel as if my previous situation was for a purpose.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1. Run my own successful photography business.
2. Travel over seas
3. See my grandchildren as happy as I hope their parents will be.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1. Progress though building my portfolio and make it to the point where I can feel confidant charging for my services.

2. Successfully complete three semesters of college (summer semester included)

3. Have my writing grow to the point where I don’t feel like I offend everyone I write to…. It’s a confidence thing…

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

My photos start with my favorite of my son. It was Halloween and my husband, who was unable to find a Dalmatian outfit for my son’s first real trick or treating adventure, came home with a small cow outfit. I borrowed a DSLR camera from a family member for the local trick or treat night and followed my husband taking my son around from door to door to gather candy. The period of time that my son was interested in performing said task was a very short period. I love how the picture has so much blur. I feel like that was the feeling of the entirety of Halloween for us. He was so cute and scared, but still it was over quickly. That is the same feeling I get from the photo.

The second picture is one I “fixed” in Photoshop. My son’s vision is so impressively bad that my brother put my son’s glasses up to his face. After about 10 seconds his eyes watered so bad that he couldn’t look though them much more. Which means as an older sister I made him do it again so I could take a picture of how big the glasses made his eyes look. It shows our sense of humor I think, it’s a great funny photo. I added blur and removed as much clarity as I could.

The third photo is one I took again with a the same borrowed camera from Halloween. I wanted to scope out a place for one of my class assignments so I would use the digital to see how it was and then shoot the 35mm (hey man, times is tough). We were at a local park and I chased my son around with a macro lens, and with some luck got a few shots of ONLY his face. I love this pic.

Lastly is a photo that I am sure will come out very small. Taken with my Sony point and shoot about 14 days after my son was born it is the one I have hanging in my house as soon as you come in my front door. Can you tell my son is my favorite subject, but really, what mother doesn’t have their child as a favorite subject?

Canon 5d markII gripped + battery pack, 24.70L, 135L, 50.14, 580EX (2), Sekonic 308S, radiopoppers studio JRX trans + receiver (2), umbrella bracket, 12 Eneloop + 6 Energizer rechargeable batts. Those are all in one bag and go with me to every shoot, then I carry my light stands, tripod, softboxes, White Lightning 1800/ABR800 Ring Flash as it suits the session. I'm saving up for a 70-200L 2.8 IS and 35L lens, but more importantly, I need a second body if I want to start shooting weddings.

What's your favorite editing software?

Lightroom + Photoshop. I archive and make collections through Lightroom. I love that the digital footprint is so small and I can even output straight to Smugmug or Facebook. Batch edits are done here too. Then I export the special images to Photoshop and do the more extensive retouching there.

Favorite Food: Anything with chocolate.

Favorite Color: It changes every so often because I love so many different ones. I grew up loving yellow and being derisive of pink because of my favorite TV show in the Philippines. It was similar to Mighty Morphine Power Rangers if that explains it better. In the summers, I love white. More year round, I love gold, orange, red and some yellows. I'm the fiery type of girl, I suppose.

Zodiac Sign: Aries. Maybe that explains my color choices.

A few of your favorite things: Puffy sleeves, pencil skirts, floral/feathery head bands, Copic markers, Prisma color pencils, football, Mechanix gloves, peacock designs, Disney's The Little Mermaid movie - to name a few. Honestly, Mechanix gloves are awesome! I have really tiny hands, so I have had to order special sized pairs. But they come handy (no pun intended). Like when you're changing your tire in the middle of the night while a bucket of Cold Stone ice cream is melting in the back seat. Or when you're trying to open a door on the wing of an FA/18 Hornet and the person who had screwed it closed had over-tightened the screws. Mechanix gloves, trust me on this one.

What inspires you? Art inspires me a great deal. I graduated in Studio Art and do illustrations when I'm not behind my camera. Mucha, Klimt, Van Gogh...I love their decorative style and their choices of color and composition....Fashion inspires me. I started out as a fashion design major in Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC a long time ago. I love to look at editorial photos and own several books, a few of which are David Lachapelle's surreal collections. Ana Gaskell inspires me. Her images are haunting, though the narrative is oft-times dark and strange. Her Alice in Wonderland series was the most influential factor in my photography in my senior year in college.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

I have to have my daily serving of twitter and facebook, and various forums I troll. It's almost ritualistic how I get up from bed, crawl my way to the computer and click through the various tabs. I'd like to add, "As I sip my coffee," but unfortunately, ever since I developed chronic insomnia when I was in the Navy some years back, I'd had to give up coffee. Hot chocolate is an awesome alternative, though, and I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of gourmet hot chocolate. Ever heard of Frozen Hot Chocolate? Absolutely yummy.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

My senior year in college, I realized that I was the happiest behind the camera. My college only offered a very cumulative degree in Art. There were no specialties, but you can "focus" on something, and I started out with my focus on Illustration. Right around my senior year, I changed that to photography and illustration, but my college didn't have a very extensive offering in terms of classes. Technique wasn't emphasized.

Questioning your intentions and your influences were: who were you as an artist? These were the things that shaped my start in photography. But you might also be wondering why I seem to have chosen the camera over my color pencils. Actually, I love using markers, but I suffer from a terrible artist's block. Blank paper terrifies me. It's something I can circumvent when I'm photographing something or someone. I can work with reality instead of creating from a blank page.

I started Kris Fulk Photography last year. Mostly I am doing portraits and lifestyle. Recently, I've branched to boudoir. I love the idea of boudoir. A few years ago, I saw a special on TV where a therapist in NYC was helping a teen age girl love her body by showing her how beautiful she was through a boudoir session. This was before boudoir was popular, maybe before it was even given the term and definition as we know it today. But don't quote me on that. Anyway, that's something that I've thought long and hard about. I want to help other people see how beautiful they were. To love their bodies.

On a different note, I'd love to one day shoot weddings too. It's the happiest day of a couple's life, and I want to be there to document their smiles, how in love they were. I know, I know. I get pretty sappy - every time I see The Notebook, I bawl my eyes out. I was still in the Navy when I got married, and we had to route a chit to ask permission to go to the court house. We didn't have our family present, just Adam and me and a couple of our sailor friends to stand as witnesses. We had two disposable cameras between all of us. While I treasure these snapshots, I wish I had someone who was there capturing our story. I want to be that person for others. I want to give images that will make you smile and remember how beautiful that day was 50 years from now. I'm a big romantic: I believe in forever.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I like to read. A lot. It started out as an obsession with the Baby Sitter's Club when I was in the 4th grade. I didn't really start to like reading till then. Now I'm a big fan of fantasy and romance (romantic fantasies/paranormals are my favorite). I love to draw, too, as you might have surmised. It just takes me a very long time to finish a drawing sometimes. I write when I can. My writer's block is even worse than my artist's block. But usually if I'm not reading (or with my camera), I'm on photoshop improving my skills with retouching and post-processing. I really enjoy that aspect of the workflow. It speaks to the illustrator in me, I suppose.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

I'm thinking about incorporating my illustration somehow, but I'm not really sure how yet.

Name three things you would like to do before you die:

I would like to travel with Adam. He's been everywhere, been to so many countries, especially while we were both serving in the military. I would like to see these places with him because I didn't get to travel; I "held down the fort," so to speak. I would like to go to the Superbowl (especially if the Giants are playing). Also, I would like to write an Epic Novel. Or my memoir. I really dig writing.

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Right now one of my main goals is to start shooting weddings in the future. I also need to market myself better, to generate more excitement in what I'm doing. Lastly and most importantly, I'm working on my branding. I have a logo in the works from a graphic designer, and I already have a list of things I want to put that logo on (i.e. product packaging etc).

This was from one of my first sessions. I love the way it's very editorial, illustrating

Elizabeth's personality and her chic-ness. This series remains one of my most favorite.

Virginia

This was my first time working with a model in a studio setting. It taught me a lot about photographer-model interaction, as well as interacting with other photographers. I was also still fiddling a lot with Photoshop, so when I look at this picture, or this series, it's accompanied by a lot of other things than just the image itself.

Traci

I love this image. Traci wanted to build a portfolio, and she emailed me when I first moved to Houston. Not only was she awesome to work with, but the geek in me was totally tap-dancing with joy when she let me experiment with lighting. To me, this isn't just a head shot; it's a photograph of a beautiful friend.

Sometimes you're just in the right spot at the right time. I was second shooting for Jessica (of JVallecorsa Photography) for Lisa and Jay's wedding. It was not your traditional wedding: there were no guests, just the couple and their maid of honor and best man. The ceremony was held at Oak Alley plantation and took about 15 minutes. Then we walked down the French Quarter for a few hours. I was trailing behind the company when Lisa saw this horse-drawn carriage. It just seemed like a magical moment.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I never wanted to be a photographer. I just loved taking pictures because I was a “memory preserver”. I have albums and albums full of pictures of all the places I’ve lived and the friends I’ve made along the way. I can remember exactly what was happening in each image. I wanted that same thing for my children. For them to have a memory of their childhood.

When my first son was born, I took pictures of him almost every day (6 years later he is beyond tired of taking pictures J). It was no different when my 2nd son was born 3 years later. Only this time I had the Refuse to Say Cheese DVD set and knew more techniques for storytelling. That made a HUGE difference in the way I took pictures of my children. Friends began to notice the difference too and started asking me to take pictures of their children.

My accidental photography business started in 2008. J Then it took about a year hiatus when I moved from San Diego to Northern California. After taking the Confidence workshop last June, I rediscovered the passion I had for photography and got my jumpstart again.

MRS Photography began in January 2008. I enjoy doing natural light, casual photography. Last year I took any session I was asked to do. J This year, I have a different mission. Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I have two – Me Ra Koh and Carey Schumacher of Barefoot Memories. I was introduced to casual photography when Carey was first starting her business and she took pictures of kids in our playgroup. I loved that my son looked so natural in front of the camera instead of the “constipated” look in front of a studio camera. J I began following her work religiously and she in turn introduced me to Me Ra’s work. What I love most about Me Ra is her ability to relate to us. Even at her level, she shares the sames fears and hesitations that those of us starting out feel and most impressively, she shares them openly.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I have the most fulfilling, yet hardest working job I have ever had in my life – full-time mom. I miss working in an office environment, but wouldn’t trade this for the world.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I am an avid scrapbooker, or should I say collector (my craft room is LOADED with products that I don’t want to use because they are too cute J). Reading relaxes me so I try to do that frequently.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

In my best Miss America response J – In my life there is nothing that I would want to change. Everything that has happened to me, good or bad, happened for a reason. I honestly believe that within all the “bad” there were lessons to be learned and because of that I would not change anything.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

1) Visit every country in the world
2) Watch my children grow old and enjoy their life with their own children and grandchildren
3) Get caught up on scrapbooking!!! J

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

1) Establish myself as the go-to photographer for children and adults with Down Syndrome in Northern California
2) Lead my business without fear (is it just me or do any of you fear success as well?)
3) Learn better time management and not feel guilty for spending time on my business

Please tell us about the photos you are submitting and why they are your favorites.

This is the picture that I took right after watching Me Ra’s Refuse to Say Cheese DVD. I had received so many compliments on it that it is the one that made me decide to make the transition from mommarazzi to starting a business.

This image is from Me Ra’s workshop and I just love how the dad’s hand looks so safe

around the baby’s head. Without seeing the dad’s face you can still sense

his adoration and protection for his baby.

I just love that they were sharing a “moment’.

Name something you just have to have everyday:

I was tempted to say Diet Pepsi, but it really and truly is my beautiful family. It always has been... I had a very difficult childhood being the daughter of a mother with mental illness. That legacy haunts me to this day... During the rough times of growing up, I always promised myself that when I could choose my family, I would choose someone I could rely on.

I met my husband when I was 19, and I'm not ignorant to the fact that getting married at 20, things were statistically against our success. I am very blessed. As I frequently tell him, he's the only good decision that I made at that age. Together we've been through 3 stillbirths, 5 live births, 2 intubations for my asthma, financial prosperity and unfortunately conversely lean times.

On occasion, he has physically fed me, clothed me and made sure that I got up in the morning. He has buffered me from some of the ugliness that the world has to offer. He cried when our first dog died. He got up each work day for 14 years and went to a job that he didn't particularly enjoy so that I could enjoy the comforts of a nice home, car and satellite tv. He let me name each of our children. He sat in line for 8 hours each home game this season so that he could secure me a good seat from which to photograph the game. He is the more organized, rational side needed to balance my creative, throw caution to the wind personality. He is always considerate of my comfort. He paints toenails. He's H O T hot.

I'm a very lucky girl and the only thing I need every day is my Scott.

Tell us all about your journey into the world of photography. When did you realize that this is what you wanted to do and why.

I've loved photography since taking a class in high school, but the flame was reignited after we lost our twins. When nothing made sense, I could still find beauty in photos.

I haven't yet taken the plunge into photography for profit. On occasion, I've photographed families from Church, friends, etc.

If you are dreaming of starting your business, what are you learning and/or doing to move you towards your goal?

Next month, I've been invited to start a great PhotoShop class and I'm really excited! I just got a new camera and I've diving right into learning it. I'm going to spend the football off-season photographing other sports, honing my skills and getting ready to find a freelance job next Fall. I absolutely adore sports photography. I'd also love to do commercial photography for the athletes, but I haven't quite figured that out yet. I'm hoping to practice on some of our athlete friends and see where that takes me. I'm still figuring things out.

Who is your favorite photographer that you follow and why?

I really enjoy Carey from Barefoot Memories for several reasons. Probably the first is the way that she's structured her business so that she controls her business and her business doesn't control her life. I admire that. Also, since I listed the ocean as one of my favorite things, I definitely enjoy her beautiful images.

Besides photography, what else do you do , i.e. work, domestic engineer, volunteer?

I am first and foremost the mother of 5 amazing children. We homeschool the 4 school aged children, so I'd probably consider this my full time job.

What are some of your other hobbies and/or things that you like to do besides photography?

I really enjoy sewing! I love to make outfits for my girls, although at 10, Sara Jane has just about outgrown wanting to wear "mom-wear". In case you didn't know (hahhaa) I LOVE football, especially our local college team.

Do you have any other businesses that you are incorporating and/or combining in your photography business or that is separate other than photography?

Along the sewing line, I am really interested to explore the option of combining my love of boutique clothing with my love of photography. I think it would be fun to offer mini-sessions that include a custom t-shirt, say to celebrate a first birthday or something similar.

If there is one thing in the world that you would like to change, what would that be and why?

I've never understood why so many children are in foster care waiting for a "forever home". As soon as we're financially stable again, I hope to be able to adopt a few children out of foster care.

Name three things you would like to do before you die?

Raise my children to be happy, self-confident, contributing members of society with families of their own. TRAVEL! Have photos published in Sports Illustrated. ;)

List three goals you would like to accomplish in 2010:

Be accepting regular clients by May. Mastering my studio lights. Finding a freelance job for the football season. :)
